What is involved in replacing the O2 sensors? Don't they just thread in?

Yes, they are pretty easy in theory to change with the right tools. Getting the old connectors apart after many years is actually the harder part.

I had all 4 brand new o2 sensors removed, and they were already black with like smoke residue.I exchanged them and got new sets but i don't want to replaced them to have to same thing happen. the mechanic said something bout some rod or pipe not burning the oil properly.... something to dat sort, anyone has an insight?

90% of O2 faults on Rovers is due to the need of a tune up, that means new plugs and wires.
Weak spark will send to much unburnt fuel down stream and foul the O2's and once fouled they will not work correctly and the ECU will read that as non responsive (bad O2)
Just because you do not have mis fire codes does not mean your plugs and wires are still good.

If they put new plugs and wires on when they did the head gaskets then it is a bad MAF I would say.
