Service Engine light on Disco II

Default Service Engine light on Disco II

I have a Disco with 103,000 miles and service engine light came on.

What does disconnecting the battery resolve other than turning the service light off?

All fluids are good and oil has been changed! New battery and cleaned connections.

If you take a vehicle to a shop for a scan, they can charge sometimes $50 - $90 for scanning the codes. Most auto parts stores will do it for free, because they want to be your parts source. If you come in for a free read, you'll think of them when you finally decide you need a part. If going that route, write down the numbers they get. Some codes are Rover specific and the generic code reader won't know exactly what they mean. Post the numbers back and you'll get answers. Or search for them yourself in the RAVE shop manual, free download below.

There is also a combination scanner / programmable gauge, the Ultra Gauge, for about $70 that will read codes, reset codes, and display things, like coolant temp, with alarm points you set. About $70.

And stores have all sorts of scanners to sell, and even wifi / blue tooth, and other versions that signal you cell phone or laptop.

Some codes you clear will come back in two to four drive cycles.

This is quite true, with the exception of me. My advise after scanning for codes: Google vehicle year, make, and P code, unless it it something obvious....I have lost track of the number of times customers have some kind of lean code, and I find their air intake hose is punctured, or unsecured.

Never disconnect the battery thinking you are going to fix something, that is stupid and could cost you even more in repairs by not fixing something before it gets any worse, it also will erase much of the stored memory in some of your ECU's cause the truck to relearn many of your driving habits.
Go get your codes read, when the lights are on and get back to us with the fault code numbers so we can help you.
