Default Service Engine Soon (SES) Lamp (amber)

1. Recently obtained a non running 2000 Disco II w/120K miles. Do not know vehicle history other than the owner used it strictly for domestic purposes. Got vehicle running after not running for several months. Service Engine Soon (SES) lamp was flashing when I drove rover around the block. Parked it and verified oil level.
2. Started vehicle and amber color SES lamp stays on solid. Engine runs a little rough. Will accomplish "60K" type service soon. Not driving vehicle at this time.
3. In a recent thread someone said the SES is merely pointing to an emissions issue and reset. Is this the case?
4. Is it possible that the SES lamp came on because the vehicle was cold when I drove it and there is a little water in the tank? Gauge indicates there is only 1/8th of tank of gas left.
5. Planning on topping off the tank with 91 octane gas and some "Heat" additive to mitigate the possible condensation in the tank. Will the "Heat" be ok in the rover or is there a better alternative?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

stop driving it. you are going to blow it up. when it flashes that means you are doing damage. only on the discovery 1's does the SES light mean your emissions needs to be cleared. you need to get a code reader and figure out whats wrong with your truck.

As I stated earlier, I am NOT driving it. The SES lamp is not flashing any more and I searched this forum extensively and found little or no information indicating the symtoms I describe as being as dire as you indicate. I do not have this vehicle licensed or insured. I live in a very small town and the NAPA store does not have a code reader to borrow or loan. I am looking at spending $300 to obtain a code reader as the 79 dollar special at NAPA does not read Land Rover codes. Nearest dealer is 240 miles away in Salt Lake City.

Go to your local auto parts store, most of them will read the fault codes for free. Get back to us with the 4 digit fault ASAP.

you can buy a code reader online for $50, no need to spend $300. If you plan on spending more for $150 you can get a scanguage 2 and that will read your codes and tell you temps of coolant, oil, cats and more.

The $300 reader will still not read the Rover specific ECU codes. Any OBD2 code reader will read the codes that cause the CEL to come on. I got one for $20. It will read and clear codes.

I got mine off of e-bay and it reads live data as well, like engine rpm, temp, road speed, maf readings, etc.
It was $80.
You dont need Rover specific codes.
