Default Shifter locking in Park

Hi,
I'm a new member to this forum and have a question. On my '98 Discovery 50th, the shifter locks into park and is a pain in the a** to get back out. I'm obvi putting my foot on the brake pedal but I have to mess around with it for a while to get it out of park. Could this be an issue with the brake system malfunctioning with the shift lock?

Thanks in advance,

Carl.

When you step on the brake pedal are your brake lights coming on? If not you will need a new brake switch. The brake switch will also prevent the shifter from coming out of park.

Hey Carl - I've got a 2003 Disco and had the exact same issue. Was a real struggle working the brakes to get the gear out of park. Ultimately I got stuck one day and it just wouldn't move - had to call for a tow, but that turned out to be a chore in itself, because the truck wouldn't get into N to get onto a flatbed. The driver released the drive shaft manually and I had two choices: put the truck into N and push it onto the flatbed, or put it into D and I could get myself to a shop without being able to back up, or alter the gear. Once at the garage I would turn the car off, and it would be stuck in drive. Since I was stuck out in the middle of nowhere when it happened, I opted for a service charge and drove the car to a shop. They ended up replacing a small piece in the gear shaft that had worn out. Set me back about $400 including labor. I would strongly advise you have your gear shaft mechanism checked out and make the repair before getting stuck unable to work it out of P. Good luck - Mike

I had a similar issue with mine. It was a piece inside of the shift lever. When you push in the button on the side of the shifter, it lifts the rod up inside the shifter so you can take it out of park. Until I got the part, my temporary solution was to leave the cover off the shifter and use a set of pliers to pull up the rod.

Or, your brake switch has failed, are your brake lights working?
