A Side by Side Look at Discovery I & II
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but my son and daughter-in-law just bought a Land Rover Discovery. I checked this thread to try to figure out if they bought a Disco 1 or 2. They have a 98 with a 4.0 V8 that has the flat square door handles of the Disco 1, but the rear tail lights are like the Disco 2 in the comparison photos. Are there any other items that can give it away to which version they have? Thanks.

I have never owned a D1 so cannot really submit an objective comment. My only comment is it looks dated compared to the D2 and D2A as much as the D2 looks against the D3/LR3 and RRS. However, that doesn't detract from it's capabilities both on and off road. The D1 is probably the most off roaded of the Disco line up followed by the D2. I have owned 2x D2's, a 2000 V8 and I now have a 2003 TD5. I have a personal preference for the diesel versions in most vehicles in that they are very reliable and invariably do what is claimed. Both the D2's have been great trucks and most exciting to use even compared to the RRS. The RRS is luxury but equally so are the D2's just noisier. (For rugged fun I have to mention the ancient Pajero 2.8 Td SWB as well as it is now approaching 20 years old and still runs like a train.) Given the choice all over again I still think I'd settle for the D2 TD5 as the best of these trucks from my perspective.
They had some d2's with the flat door handles I thought?
x2 on what France said, they do look dated, but I'm jealous of their rear end. The stock 3 link makes that thing flex like mad

After looking at some other pics, and some of my son's Disco, then paying attention to the height of the rear lights compared to the windows, it appears that it is a Disco 1. Thanks for helping me to figure out the proper version so I can find some of the items that need to be fixed.

I have an 04 DII...arguably the best of the best (CDL, styling, bells/whistles, etc.) and I LOVE it. After knowing what I know now however, I would have prefered to get a lower mileage DI. The power difference is negligible (DIIs are heavier anway) and they are more DIY friendly. After swapping out the engine, I can say it would have been a lot easier on a DI and with less to go wrong (fewer components). Add to that the fact that all things equal, the DI will be cheaper and although I like the DIIs better, I just don't think they're worth the extra coin. I am however coming from the perspective that the only DII I'd consider is an 04, and also assumes you could find a low mileage/good condition DI (no simple task) so that skews the results.
Arguably one of the worst also. I'd rather have a BMW 99-01, with old style headlights and install a CDL lever instead of the Ford 02-04's with prettier headlights, and a finickier (didn't even know that was a word, finickier) 4.6 engine. It mostly boils down to maintenance, and the previous owners of the car.
