I had a D1 that I sold back in 06 and missed it shortly after trading it for a pickup. About four years ago my wife and I decided to look for a low mileage 04 D2. We found one and it was her daily driver until last ,month when we bought a LR2 (that she loves!) The original plan was to sell the D2 but I started driving it and now can't part with it! We have done so much to it in four years( head gaskets, front drive shaft, headliner etc.)I could never replace it later if I wanted to. I had the ability to put a 3/36 power train warranty on it for a good price so I figured why not drive it and enjoy it. It does ride better than my D1 and it has a little more creature comforts than the D1. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice!

There should be a good video coming soon from Lucky8 comparing the D1, D2, D3 and D4 off road at SCAR.

Default Wheel bolt pattern

Maybe it's just me, but on the first page, I think it's the first set of pics, that shows the front ends, another difference is the bolt pattern on the wheels. The D1 has 5x6.5 yes? That's a HUGE bolt pattern, and the D2's looks noticeably smaller.

Default Front bumper valance

Again, from page 1, the pics of the front, I think the front bumpers and valances are noticeably different as well. The end caps on the D1 are considerably smaller, and makes removing the lower bumper valance look much cleaner, as opposed to the D2. Here are the "before and after" pic of when I removed the lower bumper valance on my D1, and trimmed the end caps:
