hey guys,
my 95 disco has nonresponsive, spongey steering. its also leaking. lucas power steering stuff slowed it down some but with tax return id like to fix it right. do i need whole steering box or is there a way to fix the one ive got. at 98ooo time to replace timing belt and water pump?
some say wait till it goes that sounds silly to me though.

Check your manual to verify, but my 97 takes ATF as fluid in the power steering. Not sure if that was just a BMW thing. Lucas will blow out your seals. Power scrub your gear box and hoses and see where it is leaking. Probably the hose connections where they return, and it will get worse if you added Lucas. Cut off the old factory clips and use regular worm type hose clamps.

If it is the Box, you can get new seals.

What do you mean by spongey, does it feel like there is a lot of play? You can get a good used box @ www.roverlandparts.com

All the D1's take ATF. 90% of the time it is a leaking hose clamp.
Your trk does NOT have a timing belt, it has a timing chain. Timing chains last the life of the engine unless you use your trk as a delivery or taxi vehicle.
Leave the water pump alone unless it is leaking.
What you are thinking of is engines that have timing belts that need to be replaced every 60,000 miles. Like Hondas, Toyotas and American cars with Japenese engines.
The timing belt drives the water pump and inorder to replace the water pump you have to remove the timing belt. So the idea is to replace the water pump at the same time to save labor costs weather or not the water pump is bad.
On these, you run it until it goes bad.
Since you are new to Rovers you know that you MUST run premium gas right?
