k. put in 15w40 rotella with a bottle of oil detergent. ticking has not changed. may have gained 1 psi or so in the oil pressure department. listened to the ticking noise with a stethoscope through the valve cover and oil pan and am not sure witch its coming from. they both sounded about the same ticking only starts after the engine is completely warmed up. thanks for the help so far any other suggestions are appreciated. thanks again

Has anyone mentioned to check the catalytic converters?
When the guts start to fall apart they can sound like lifter noise and telescope upto the engine.

With the engine off tap on them with a block of wood or small hammer, if they rattle they need replaced.

not the cats, just checked. thanks though spike. thinking either lifters, or rod bearing. what are some signs that will rule one or the other out? without disassembling hopefully. thanks again

try to make a video of the noice and post it up on youtube for us all to hear.

do your best to capture the noise.

bad rod bearings usually dont make a tick sound. There is tremendous stress on rod bearings, when they go bad you can tell

Rod knock is more of a deep slow "thud" and lifters are a lighter quick "tick tick".

well here is a video. its not my disco but this is almost exactly what it sounds like. the only difference is mine is more sporadic. sometimes its constant other times it will tick for a min and then stop for a couple seconds then start ticking again. also it dosent start ticking till after it is completely warmed up. it also dosent seem as loud on my disco and it dosent increase with rev past 1500 rpm. sorry dont have a video camera right now to record with.

That looked like my power steering resevoir

Did you ever see a hydraulic lifter apart?

It relys exclusively on oil to keep it quiet, so if you break loose old sludge, varnish, etc , it will probably take some time to clear out.

Mine sounded like an old sewing machine for weeks after I cleaned it, now it's been excellent for months.

If you've flushed it, especially with trans fluid (which opened a can of worms for me), change your oil about every 500 or so, I'll bet your tick will disappear.

mine did

luck,greg

I wouldnt worry about it, lifter noise can last forever or go away in a few hundred miles.
