its deffinately lounder outside with the hood up. how exactly do i do the flush? just fill it up with atf then drain? if that dont work is it more likely that it is lifters or rocker shaft and push rods

I agree, much less agressive so likely to do a more thorough job over time.

Change oil more frequently, too.

If it's a lifter tick, I think it will go away, mine did.

so i drove it more today than usual. once it warmed up and the tick started and stayed for a little while my oil press dropped to 9-10 at idle and 40-42 at 2000. this dosent sound good does it. looks like ill probably have to replace the oil pump. what do you guys think

if the oil pressure light is on then yes. but if it won't go away and its the lifters and not a bearing underneath then its not the pump.

the oil light is not on yet but i am afraid that it will be pretty soon if the pressure drops any more. i honestly dont know what the noise is but after the oil heats up and the pressure drops thats when the ticking starts. i just bought this car and cant afford to put a new motor in it.

Please take 10 deep slow breaths, we'll wait:

Ok, did you install heavier oil? - the concensus is to do so.

The land rover oil light sensor trips at about 8#, so anything above that at normal idle speed is acceptable to land rover.

If I were you, (I was last year,), I'd put in 15-40, a can of oil treatment with instructions that say to use at every oil change. (a more engine-friendly de-sludge)

To help empower yourself, take a piece of small 1/4"ish hose 2' long, put one end to your ear & the other zeroing in on the ticking noise.
(careful of moving parts)

If it's coming from the valve covers, it's more than likely to be lifter noise.
If it's coming from somewhere else, (exhaust manifold, front engine cover, oil pan, etc. it's something else -- let us know.

Otherwise, I'd drive it, it may take several oil change cycles B/4 the lifter ticking(if that's what it is) is gone.

will be doing anither oil change on saturday. will use 15w40 rotella. i recently changed the oil pan gasket (about 2 weeks ago) can i reuse it if i take the pan off again? also the rave manual says to use a sealant between the block and the gasket. what kind do i use? is it just rtv silicone sealant? i want to check the pickup tubes and clean them out. thanks gregg an everyone else that has chimed in.

Yes you can just use RTV, just make sure you give it plenty of time to cure before you put oil back in it.
