Default starter motor problems

Hi all,

I am unable to start my 1997 discovery v8. When i turn the ignition on I hear a whirring sound like that of a small servo motor but the engine doesn't engage or even crank. I am pretty sure that the problem is in the starter motor, but I can't figure out how to remove it. Theres a plate thats in the way which I don't know how to remove, also when i get under the car, i don't have much clearance or space to move around, so any suggestions on how to remove the motor would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Sorry but it is a real pain in the rear, it takes allen head socket, I dont know what size.
It will be easier if you can get the front of the truck up in the air, like on jack stands or ramps.
Tap the starter with a hammer and then see if the starter will engage the flywheel.

Sounds like Bendix gear on the starter is not engaging.
Yes, they are a bit of a bugger to remove.
