Default Starting problems

Can anyone help. We have a 2003 Disco 2 TD5 with starting issues. This is quite an intermittent problem which makes no sense to me. We can get in the car on occasions and it fires up on the button, hot or cold. On other occasions though more notably from cold, you can get in the car and it seems to crank forever before it almost seems to catch then it just about fires up. Once running, it'll run no problem. When you turn it off. It may start first turn of the key or it may just take an age again with the kids sitting their offering their views and support asking when can we have a car that works properly. Solenoid parts were replaced the other day on the starter which solved one problem but this one seems to come and go when it chooses. Drove from Lincs to North Yorkshire yesterday. Started first time going
up there but got in it this morning and it takes forever to crank over and then fire. Multiple thoughts ranging from return valves to fuel pumps. The local mechanic changed the loom on the plugs recently but it hasn't resolved the problem. I'm reasonably mechanically minded and really enjoy figuring things out and having a crack at things but all things electric make little sense. Our S1 86" is much easier. Any guidance would be appreciated.
