Is this one of those Rover deals that is going to happen to me sooner or later? If it is, I'm going to by one and keep it in my spares kit and cut the hole in the wheel well ahead of time. I could see making an aluminum plate to cover the hole and use sheet metal screws. That is if it's a foregone conclusion that it will happen one day. I figure if it is, it will happen at the worst possible time.
It is a very, very common failure. If I hadn't replaced mine already I'd carry a spare, especially on roadtrips.
Cutting the hole isn't necessary, but would certainly help. I used some 12" needle nose pliers to get at it and it made the job much easier. I call them my 'Rover Pliers'.
