Default Stuck going in Reverse only

Without going too much into everything i’ve done to get my D2 running, I stalled out after the M and S and the Drive lights started flashing, and since then it only goes in reverse. The battery is just over a year old, I just replaced the XYZ switch, but I noticed something. The negative ground wire from the battery isn’t bolted to anything. Would this cause that problem? If so, I have some serious words to explete.

Your battery ground has to be bolted to a good ground for things to work

Post a pic of the wire you are talking about. My stock truck has only the heavy, black battery cable on the neg side. The original has a terminal that bolts to the frame just behind the battery, then runs further and is bolted to the block below the alternator.

As previously mentioned, the negative terminal of the battery should go to the engine, which is connected to the firewall on the left side by a ground strap. If there's not a firm ground there, your first hint is going to be your parking brake getting red-hot, because that's the alternate current patch.

I would verify that your XYZ switch is rotated correctly too. You may need to turn it some so it registers the gears correctly. It's really a 2 person job.

I got the XYZ Switch on right, because it still just goes in reverse. I grounded the negative wire as well, but it still will only go in reverse, and throws the P1590 and P0500 codes. But I noticed that the battery won’t give me more than 12 volts in idle. Even after trickle charging. Still getting the flashing M and S and Drive lights. And when I step on the brake, the cluster panel light flickers. I’m not sure where to go from here.

Just so I know, would the wrong battery cause these issues? I only ask because I look up the battery that’s in there and the site I’m on says it is not compatible with my disco. Forgive my ignorance, I’m still new to disco.

If your battery show 2 volts you have 1 of 2 problems your battery is no good or your alternator is no good.

To test :
  1. Take a multimeter
  2. set to Dc volts and the 1st voltage range above 12 usually 20
  3. Check your battery, by putting multimeter on the positive and neg terminals before starting the Disco it should be 12.5 or higher
  4. Now start the Disco and do the same test at idle you should get between 13.0 and 13.9 closer to 13.9 is better
If you fail #3 your battery might still be good but discharged, hook your charger up and leave it for at least 36 hours. Trickle chargers take forever to recharge a battery. Check it once and a while to make sure it does not get over-charged
