They cannot import diesels into the North America because they do not meet the emissions regulations.
To much soot.

I thought the defenders stopped being imported because of emissions?

How much of a change is it to make the vehicle pass emissions?

I know that Ford did away with the Excursion because they saw it would cost more for them to change the vehicle to meet the emissions requirements than they were standing to make on the vehicle.

And a couple years back there was an article in pearson's 4 wheel and off-road that GM was devolping a nice looking heay-duty pick up to phase into the military. Or perhaps that was a concept vehicle they were trying to pitch to the military

They stopped importing Defenders because there was no demand for them.
The US market is flooded with SUV's and the Defender was overpriced for what you got, $50,000 for a basic non luxury SUV? Not in the US. Americans dont take their SUV's off raod, only 4% of 4x4 SUV's leave the road. Thats why Ford, Chevy and Dodge have the push button 4 wheel drive systems and the clutch driven transfer cases, no need for HD transfer cases and gear boxes.

How much would it cost to make a import diesel meet US emissions? More than you want to spend.

Every country has its own emissions standards.
The US has different emissions standards for diesels than does the UK for example.
Ford can sell a diesl powered pick up truck in the US because it passes the light duty diesel emissions standards for the US.
Land Rover cannot sell a diesel power truck in the US because it does NOT pass the emissions standards for light duty diesel engines for the US.
Land Rover could sell diesel Discoveries here in the US if there was a market for them.
They could make the changes and sell them here, but if no body is going to buy them then why go through all the hassle? You need to sell more than 5 to make it worth your while.
LR is a low volume seller here in the US, it just is not worth their time and money.
Not to mention the stigmata that diesels have here in the US, slow, noisy, smelly. And diesel is still more expensive than gas, yes you almost double your MPG, but you also pay at least a dollar more per gallon.
Did I mention the stereo type that diesel's have here in the States?
Not enough people want them to make it profitable.
Toyota would LOVE to sell a 3 cylinder diesel Prius, not going to happen.

And this was mentioned in another post, the military uses diesels because they can run on almost any type of fuel found in any country, less things to go wrong, can go underwater, more tourqe, better MPG and just plain old more reliable.

I was under the impression that LR did not want to deal with the expense of putting airbags into the few thousand Defenders sold in the US and so they quit on any US Defenders after 1997. Not enough bang for the bucks/pounds/ Euros they would have to have spent. I would think that LR dealers would have loved to continue to have them in their showrooms but LR as a company could not justify the added expense.

Airbags were required in 1995. You could be right though.

The US emissions standards for Diesels are so out of Place.
When a Ford/Dodge/GM diesel owner can buy a Banks kit or some other flavor Kit to add HP and Torque and make there Rigs smoke Like an Old Train Engene. it Seems rediculious to Hamper Forgien makes to Meet some presucribed Standered.

This is why I wish they would just make 2 versions of some of these SUVs. One pretty one for all the soccer moms and one HD one with a big smelly powerful diesel and heavy duty axles and 3 locking diffs and all that good stuff for us wheelers who actually know something about... well anything really. I guess a lot easier said than done though lol. Just wishful thinking.
