i wonder what a disco would be like with a 12 valve cummins in it.the old school one with mechanical fuel pump.btw did anybody see top gear episode 4?they had a full size jag with a twin turbo diesel that averaged 52mpg on a 750 mile drive from switzerland to blackpool uk.it is a shame that that european diesel vehicles are not marketed here.as an owner of an 02 dodge diesel i can testify to the low maintenance required by a well manufactured diesel engine.

Seeing how this thread has gone in two directions, I'll start off saying s are needed, they do good for the members, and are even more relevant than ever. If you adjusted the pay for inflation,if there was still a workermaking ford carswho started in the early 1900s when he was told he could make $5 a day, hiscurrent pay, under the current contract, would be $5.05 a day. One whole damn nickle for almost100 years! that is progress!s were needed and are needed.

I will agree, though, the rank and file do need to realise that everybody is in the same boat, and the harder they work, the better off the company will be. Is that always the case? No, but then again, he(or she) only builds the cars, they do not design, market, or sell the car.

Some s do have criminal leadership, but I alsosay there are more criminals on wall street than on main street...

Then back to the other direction. A basic TDI would rock! The green 4xin the picture looks awesome, kind ofalovechild of a unimog and disco having a one-night stand.
Diesels are great engines, andif TATA could put a reliable, solid diesel into the disco, and do solid job of it, that would be great. However, I dohave to say, I hope TATA does not go the way BAJAdid onits early scooters. The castings wererough, and the quality even worse than anythingyou could imagine (yeah, yeah, quality scooter jokes go here...) but BAJAJ craftmanshipwasbad. So long as TATA does not try to make it basic by using basic manufacturin in India, I would be happy.

If TATA can do for the LandRover what they already do with their own 4Wds the next generation of LR's will be impressive.

Here is a thread with some info on the SUMO.
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...eel-drive.html

Now that is AN Impresive Looking vehicle.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sadly, that "impressive Looking vehicle" is a Mercedes G-Wagon. The Tata Sumo looks nothing like it. Think "London Taxi" crossed with "international shipping container" and you're about bang on.

Here's one... nice eh? [:'(]

If Tata do for Land Rover what they've done for their own vehicles... LR is screwed - you can buy Tata jeeps over here... but no-one in their right mind does.

As to the Tata LSV, the spec sheet is great if you are going to get shot at with assault rifles, but for use by real people it's a bit rubbish really. "maximum. running speed of 105 kmph" Err... that is a maximum speed of 65, at which point that diesel engine will be SCREAMING to the point at which you would be unable to think properly, let alone hear, or, in all probability thanks to the vibration, see anything. Good job it's well armoured as it will need to be able to go through anything in front of it (shop fronts, bus queues, buses) as driving it at highway speeds will mean the driver is blind and has no teeth left

OK... May stand corrected?

The vehicle in the image was found via a google image search and is labeled TATA SUMO along with many other images of the same vehicle? It looks like a well build truck. This is not a TATA vrs. LR discussion.

PS- to redirect the thread back to my original question; just trying to confirm the possibility of a Disco TDI in the utilitarian form.

Once GM goes under is our military going to use Defenders too?
Canadian's already use G-Wagons apparently... heresay as I've no first hand info. Although, apparently, some of the US Special Forces are already using Landies as the HUMVEE was just too big for a 4 man crew and, in some ways, less able.

I don't think so... I live nextdoor to a military base and the only thing I see are Chevy pick-up trucks painted in army green. Along with some old trucks that are at least 15 years old.

In Canada, there are quite a few Defenders, all of them are diesels. But I haven't seen any diesel Discos. But a diesel LR3 would be really cool.

Jull is right, the military is phasing out HUMVEEs. It's replacement will be either 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton pick-ups..I forget which one.

no idea what SF uses..I could see them using rovers on foreign operations.

The HUMVEE is/was a great vehicle, but it is just to big and heavy. Big diesel V8, 3 speed auto and 4 wheel indy suspension, it can go anywhere it can fit.
The Defender is a much better suited vehicle for military use, open top, hard top or canvas, you can mount a automatic weapon, you can carry lots of gear and it is light enough that a helicopter can transport it.
Fast attack mobility vehicles are for just that, if you need to move cargo you need a truck. HUMVEES can move cargo, but they dont, they carry four men, alot of wasted space.
To big and to expensive for the job, thats the American way.

Err... the diesel "LR3" you are all after already exists in the UK. It is called the Discovery 3 TDV6 and it's a V6 turbo diesel. There's even a TDV8 Range Rover for the better healed...

Dont you have Google on your side of the pond?

Hell man, Gooles headquarters is in my state!
No need to Google it, just go to Land Rovers home page and when it says "pick a country" you pick...are you ready...UK. Or AU. Or South America. Or Aisia. Or Russia. Or any country that you want.
That is what I do when I check out a company, if I want to know more about them and what they sell, I "gasp" select a country other than the US.
I know, I know, a American who knows that we are not the only country in the world.

well the point of the post was about the possibility that the diesel version would be available in north america. i don't know why european car companies don't sell diesels in north america. the only way to get a diesel LR is to import it.

The guy where I buy my parts is specialized in diesel conversions. He puts diesel engines in any LR if you can afford to pay for it. He even converted his Disco to run on fryer oil. He also restores a whole bunch of Defenders and they look awesome. you can check out his website at www.britrest.com
