What about starting with this or this. How can your be sure the engine is done?
Just dont drive it and check the oil pressure.

I know two people that own a 2003 that replace their front cover and their engine is back rolling again. Have faith it may not be the end

Sorry to hear that snowdude.

Not to highjack the thread, but what's the cheapest solution here, assuming it is an oil pump failure? A used '04 4.6? Is that a strait swap? Or is a rebuild with a new non-screwed up 03 block the better way to go? For extreme cheapskates (such as myself) is it possible to remove the engine, replace the pump and reinstall the engine and be all good for another 30k or something?

My 03 is in the VIN roulette range.

SNOWDUDE!

Check it:

If I was in your shoes I might do this. It's an 04 4.6 with 136k on it (not so great mileage) and needs a HC for $699 OBO. Before you put it in you could repair it and do the major stuff and probably be at $1500 or so. Still a lot, but more reasonable than $3-5k.

Comments please! I might do this myself if/when the fatal day comes...

You solution is simple:
1) Used engine (I've bought many over the years, never been burned).
2) Install it yourself, or with a buddy. No mechanical skills? Well, necessity tends to push folks towards practicing self-reliance. Get some tools, give it a try. Only thing standing in your way is your own self-doubts. This forum is a great helping tool.

Best of luck,

Mark G

Man that really sucks, I feel for you

IMO you should price it out the engine swap before you give up. It might be cheaper than selling your Disco for next to nothing because of the engine issue, then buying a replacement used car, then paying sales tax, title fees, etc,...

It really boils down to how much time you have to invest and what kind of tools/garage you have access to.

For most 4x4 vehicles, engine swaps are #2 behind transmission swaps. transmission swaps are a pain...lol

Swapping the exact same engine should not be very hard. No welding, no new wire harnesses (this is the pain in the ***, $$$, if using a different engine). It would pretty much be unplug and plug. All you would just need is the cash for another engine and the motivation to do it.

You can rent a lift from Autozone to pull it out and put the other one in. The lift might even be free, u just pay a holding fee or something. Get yourself some air tools from Sears also to make it easier/faster. Have access to a few breaker bars and socket driver extensions. Have a buddy to help with the big stuff.

I bet you could knock it out in a weekend and save thousands, plus walk away knowing A LOT more about your rig than you did before. Start a thead before you start and picture and walk thru the process, make yourself famous on the Land Rover Forums.

I would shop for a wrecked rover (I see a lot of them on craigslist). You could strip the engine, put it in yours, then strip the rest of it, clean the parts, and sell them out on craigslist over time (xfer case, transmission, seats, dash controls, sensors, switches, etc. You might even break even in the long run.

I've swapped an '04 engine into my '03. It's pretty straighforward plug and play. Maybe not as easy as one would hope, but it'd doable. Took me about 3.5 days of pretty hard work. I could do it faster now, but you're bound to have several things come up that easily waste 1/4 of a day.
