I just got it back, they replaced the oil pump sensor, cleaned out the oil pan, and sucked some sludge out of something. how this was 3 hours of labor, I dont know.

They tested the oil pressure when I brought it in and it was normal, and tested it after a cold start and fluid change, and it was normal again. I drove it home and its driving better then ever; lights turn off, no lifter pinging. Im thinking im going to drive it for a while. The service writer said there was some sludge, but not that much as the head gaskets were done 10k ago.

Went strait from the dealer to the express convinence center across the street and bought a powerball! If I win the disco's getting a new engine, brush guard, and sd roof rack. Oh and it'll get a new brother, the lr4 I test drove when I was there.

Bryan H,
Just curious. Does that make your 2003 have a salvage title when you swap the engine?
Or if you would rebuild the engine and keep the same block it would not be salvaged.

The only way it would have a salvaged title is if something were reported.
If you total it and then fix it yourself whos going to know?
Blow up the engine and fix it yourself, whos going to know?
Drive it into your pool, dry it out, whos going to know?
Carfax wont know, the state wont know, only you and God will know.

Make sure you stay with the good oil, change it every 3,000 miles, not every 4,000, not every 3500, every 3,000.
If you use full synthetic or diesel oil then go every 5,000.

Going to my local pizza restaurant, I started it up and about 15 seconds into running the oil light flickered on and off 3 times, then i shut it off. I turned it back in a few seconds later and the oil light stayed on.

IM SCREWED D:

(truck was not on for more then 1 min total)

Spike: Would just replacing the oil pump and front cover "Band Aid" it, or would it continue failing at the same rate? I know this is a Disco Mike question, but unfortunately hes out Roving somewhere, of course the one time I truly need to talk to him.

Man Vandev,
Your a bit jaded since your 2004 went south. I guess I might be too if I had a 2004 and it died!

Snowdude,
Keep the faith man. Let us know what you find in the oil gear when you get that far. I am interested to know if parts of the gear teeth are broken off. Or if you can just replace the gear itself, add a new crankshaft seal and see if it works for a long while. Just curious what oil you use? How long you owned your 03 and if you did the 60k/90k maintenance under your ownership? I dont think this is the end for your Discovery. I know two people that fixed this problem with a used front cover. Might be a good time to install a oil presure gauge while doing all this work for better piece of mind. That way if you oil light comes on you can reference the presure at that same time.

+1 million on the oil pressure light. If I don't get a ScanGauge I might do that myself. It would be nice if they would have installed those factory instead of just the idiot light.

Like the sense of optimism, Boss. SnowDude, my $50 offer to partially sponsor your front cover job still stands. Try to hit up others on the forum. Maybe we could offset your cost for one from AB if you provide a detailed DIY and six months of follow up reporting...Paypal awaits. It's worth it to me to know what I can expect from mine in a year or so.

I had the same problem with my '03 in the dreaded VIN range. Oil light flickered at startup for a while. One day it stayed on solid. Replaced frontcover/oil pump and problem solved. Just replace the pump.
