Sounds like you've got a fuel delivery issue. I'd start with the small stuff like fuel pump fuse/relay. If you're good there, move on to the filter and, ultimately, the pump.
Unfortunately, where you said it's been running rough for a couple of days and with the age and mileage,it sounds more like a pump than a filter. A pump will usually give you the types of warning signs that you got (stumbling, etc.) and, ultimately, go dead. Even if a filter is badly clogged, it'll often allow enough gas through to intermittently fire the engine.
Go easy on attempts to start it. If your pump's gone, it's not going to happen.....and you'll do a number on your starter.

The sure way I know to tell if your fule pump goes out is that it's always right after you fill up. That way you have a ton of gas to drain out before you remove the tank - I think it's one of Murphy's laws.
That is a fact. I filled up my old Suburban with 42.7 gallons, and made it home. It went out in the driveway (thank goodness) but I had to drain most of the 42 out. I filled up 3 of my other cars from it. Murphy.....
Actually, you may have a good theory there......given that pumps overheat when the fuel level gets too low to keep them submerged/cooled by the gas, it makes sense thatsomeone would be in need of afull-tank fill-upright around the time that their pump's on it's way out.
Then again, it's probably not worth trying to make sense of Murphy's Law!
