Don't let all this dissuade you - there's always something about a vehicle. They all have their weak spots. The LR DiscoII has, maybe one more than it's fair share BUT there are positives as well. Transmission and transfer case are generally reliable if maintained. Engine needs love at higher miles BUT will see good miles if it gets proper high-miler care. They have a proper front and rear solid axle. They lend themselves fairly well to suspension upgrades but don't painfully need them to run basic trails. You stuff quite a few people in one and / or lots of gear. They're not so huge you can't park them...

They're fun to drive, I love the view (especially down - very nice if you've a tire on a cliff edge)... they're British.

After reading these through I am going to continue my search - but may pass on this one. I have found three others worth checking out. A private owner 2004 DII with 90k ish, new headgasket and other parts, plus he has the good temp gauge and a few other bits - based on the description seems like the guy knows what is up.

There is also a very clean looking 2004 asking 10k, and a 2003 D4 that appears to have had a complete rebuild done. Both of these are at Auto Europe, a local dealer who always has a ton of Rovers + plus Morgans, Lotus, Ariel Atoms, Nobles and other good stuff. They do good work. See what I can drum up.

Anyway I slice it - Ill have whatever I may purchase inspected by someone who knows these. Speaking of which - anyone know any good LR mechanics in the Metro Detroit area?

Good morning, I own a D2 and a 100 series landcruiser, I also have owned an 80 series a landcruiser. The 100 series landcruiser is the most comfortable SUV I have ever driven. The 80 series is a great car also. Either will give you a nearly maint free service life.
My friends always kid me when I take my D2 any distance from home about a break down, I have had no real issues but waiting for it to happen.

 

What, in your opinion, is the best value of the three?

UZJ100 are still pretty expensive, I have found some for 12-13k with around 130k.

UZJ80 are pretty cheap, can find them under 10k

DII are pretty plentiful at 8-10k.

In a perfect world I would do the UZJ100, but the DII are attractive because I feel like you are getting more for your money.

Are the headaches worth the cost?

How many miles are too much on a UZJ100 in your opinion?

 

I paid 4K for my DII with 92K miles. I sold my last FJ80 with 280K with no issues for 4K. I bought a 100 series for 12K with 100K miles. Next to no maint for the Landcruisers. I love the DII but I put piles of miles on them. Landcruisers and DII off road well. The 100 series is by far the most comfortable. Only my opinion. 100 series and DII are in my drive way. Now, I have seen a few FJ80s on ebay with a cummins 4BT engine wich I would sell the farm and crawl accross glass to get if I could....I have two bigger Cummins that better mileage than the two SUVs combined going downhill in neutral with a tailwind....Only my opinion.
