Having done this a few times I would add to get the cam sprocket lined up with the chain on (by turning the crank) because it is very hard to rotate by itself and that protects the valves. Then take it off and rotate the crank sprocket to the correct position. But you don't want to rotate the crank sprocket more than about 1/4 rotation with the chain off because you will hit a valve. Just nudge it the correct direction, then put the chain on and slide both sprockets into position. If the crank needs to go backwards just move it by the crank weights.

Great advice, thanks Charlie. So put everything on, crank until the cam is lined up at dead 6 o'clock, then take the chain off and turn the crank with the bolt in to line it up to 12 o'clock. And since it's only 1 tooth off I imagine it will be all right? I'm taking my spark plugs and valve covers off this week, would it be better to do this while they're off?

That's right but be sure not to turn the crank around if it is past there you need it (clockwise facing the engine); just reiterating because the pistons will definitely hit the valves (I've done that, ugh).

Having the spark plugs out makes the crank easier to turn but as little as you will be turning it, it isn't absolutely necessary. I like to have mine out so after I line everything up and put the chain on I can turn it a full revolution to be sure they line up again as they pass. Valve covers won't matter either way.

I've always done it with the engine out. If you are doing it with the engine in.... BRAVO!

Chubbs878, here's the write-up I followed for the timing chain: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...rite-up-77138/

My list of repairs for this particular job include:
Water pump gasket, front cover gasket, oil pump, front crankshaft seal, timing chain and gears, oil pan gasket.

Next up:
Valve cover gaskets, spark plugs and wires, brake bleed, transmission, transfer case, axle and differential fluids, and a broken front passenger window regulator repair, piece bought off here from a user.

Funny, my wife and I bought our 2004 SE Disco about the same time you bought yours, chubbs878, and we looked at a 2003 SE7 with about that many miles too. It was silver I believe, being sold in Fayetteville, AR, where we live.
Coincidentally, we are right on-par with purchase, mileage and service (more or less)
You really made the correct choice as the '04 has a very nice factory differential lock. 2003MY has this option deleted so I had to source all of the parts and now fix the upgrade and get it wired-in which has presently detoured me from the front cover bits that you are currently on, along with an inline thermostat mod and oil-cooler which I highly suggest to you. Should have it all done before summer gets here! Good luck and stay in touch
Joe

So as someone said earlier, it was just a really loose timing chain, not a jumped tooth. When I put the new chain on, the marks lined up perfectly without any adjusting.

Here goes putting it all back together.
