Default Things to have on hand for oil pump gear change?

Im getting ready to tear into the oil pump and replace the gears as a preventive maintenance item. I figured since it is a 2003 with 110k miles and it is within the vin range of potential oil pump problems, it would be a good idea even though my oil pressure is within range. I also need to replace the gasket in the power steering pump since its leaking at the joint in the center and I figured it would be a good time to replace water pump and thermostat since they are both original. My question is if I need any special tools? I guess I will need a pulley puller for the crank pulley and will I need the lrt-12-090 tool that the rave says to use to line up drive gear keyway with woodruff key? or can this be done another way? and they also talk about timing cover seal removal and installation tools, do I really need these? Any helpful hints or insight from others who have done this or things to have on hand to save trips to the local autoparts place would be great. Thanks for your all time!

At your mileage, and it may be a little early, if it were mine, I would replace the timing chain set cause it is probably pretty sloppy at this point which will effect your timing and MPG.

1. You will find a number of posts for methods to remove crank pulley which don't involve the special tool, including one you can fab yourself.

2. You will find a good write up recently by pedronz, of insitu bearing replacement. see https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...hlight=pedronz

3. Be sure to spin engine by hand and starter with plugs removed and fuel relay removed to get oil going first time.

What about the locator tool when reinstalling timing cover? Is it necessary?

I would say 2 timing cover gaskets. They look easy to mess up. I have 2 on hand when I do this in a few weeks. Also O-ring for oil pickup. Good time to replace it. I got all that from AB. Also O-ring on oil filter neck. Not required but its $8 and might as well when you have the front cover apart.

Thanks for all the reply's! Does anyone know if I really need the tool the rave said to use when aligning the drive gear key way with the woodruff key when re installing the timing cover? Also, those who have done the oil pump gear change, how long did it take? Im thinking of setting aside two days to complete the oil pump rebuild, water pump change and fixing leak in power steering pump case.

I didn't use an aligning tool... I made sure the key ways "face each other" per the RAVE manual, and then when I put the gears and chain on, it slide right on without moving either the crank or cam.

For the oil pump, I replaced it within the timing cover, then just slipped the timing cover on in...

I put the timing cover gasket on dry, per RAVE.

I put a new water pump on there, and used super blue gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket.

I put super black on the 2 sets of joints the RAVE says to on the oil pan gasket.

I also dobbed a bit of the black on the two gasket holes on the back of the gasket.

I pulled the fuel pump fuse and spun it 3 times for 15 seconds each with the starter to circ the oil. When I started it, it started right up and the oil pressure was fine.

took me a couple days on a long weekend...

I used an air ratchet to get the crank flywheel off.
