After I swapped out my engine this past summer due to the ticking I pulled the heads off the old engine to examine the liners. There seemed to be no noticeable difference were the liners sat using a straight edge.

My thoughts before doing the swap was it was a liner or a stuck lifer or rocker arm. With me doing the labor for the swap and finding a used engine for a reasonable price it was less expensive than replacing the lifters, rocker arms, push rods, cam shafts, timing chain and having the heads skimmed.

Wish I would have tried that Seafoam then highway drive before.

I do still recommend a used engine swap if you are willing to do the labor.

But try other solutions with little investment to see if you can solve before going to the swap.

If that that goes through it will not help you want to get that fixed

I hate to stray from the ticking topic, but I ordered a 180 thermostat a few weeks ago from Ebay (its a Britpart) and everyone says get the 'grey' one, but mine is black...it has the correct part # on the side of the box for the 180 but I wanted to see if its still the right one as its not exactly 'grey'

Mine ticks but only at idle. And it can only be heard in the cabin or directly underneath the truck. Not audible from the engine bay.

Have not been able to figure it out but it runs perfectly and sounds healthy. I might try some more sea foam and hope for the best.

Agreed with everyone here. Do a lot more research before you replace it. Most older cars your hear on the road tick in one way or another. I just turn the radio up...

I love the ride too; but if engine ever craps out; will transplant the engine with a 4 cylinder and call it done unless another Disco2 shows up in front of me for cheap.
4 cylinder? Sheesh imagine a slower version of a D2 😳

Search on inline thermostat - look up Pete C.'s post on it.

Once the hot-ticking begins some day, slowly rev up your motor and note what RPM the tick goes away. That answer will let you know if you are dealing with a slipped sleeve, rod knock, stuck lifter, etc.

For example, rod knock won't go away...and in fact will get louder as you rev. That's bad.

At idle and parked when hot, you can gently mist a little water on your block under each of your 8 cylinders to see if a cooler temp stops the tick (and also identify which sleeve is slipping).
