Unhappy Ticking Questions for everyone!!!

Ok I have a 2003 Discovery SE7 with 85000 miles that I have had for 4 years. It developed a tick a while back. Tested the oil pressure and tested out at 20-30 at idle and 50-60 at 2000 rps. SO I took it to the shop two weeks ago to have new lifters put in. Did that and the tick was still present. Decided to go ahead and replace the oil pump to make sure I did not have a problem with that. Started it up yesterday and once again the tick is present. SO now I am going to have the rocker arms and push rods replaced. Am I doing the right thing??? I hope this ends the issue and if not, what next???? Any help would be GREAT.

Thanks in advance guys,

Phil

Basic question: have you determined where the tick is coming from? And how.

Sounds like you're throwing a lot of parts (and money) at this without having narrowed it down.

What oil are you using?
Have you checked the exhaust manifold bolts to make sure they are tight?
Have you checked your cats to make sure they are still good?

So you put new lifters on an old cam? Who says it's not a bad cam lobe? Anyway you just tossed away $200 by putting new lifters on an old cam...
What about the rocker shafts? They normally wear more than the rocker arms.

Spike - Was using 10-30 Mobil 1 synthetic, this is the oil the test numbers came from, but went up to 15-40 to see if I was not getting good pressure up to the lifters. Checked the bolts and they were tight. The mechanic says the cats are good as well. The only reason I jumped from the lifters to the oil pump was because I had called the LR stealership to ask how much a lifter job would be and the guy on the phone said "let me tell you now it is not the lifters it is the oil pump"! But I had the work in process and it was too late to change.

Bundu- The mechanic did not say anything about the cam so I will ask him about this tomorrow. I am guessing that if it was bad he would have notice and said something. I did see the rocker shafts and they look good and the arms moved freely but I did not have a new one to compare against so I am just guessing. I have been told by many that the rocker arms wear and this could be the problem. And I figured that while in there he may as well replace the push rods as well. So that is why we are going this way.

DarylJ- Both he and I thought it was the lifters but I did not use a hose or stethoscope to check which ones or verify for sure. Just thought FOR SURE it was the lifters. But we guessed wrong. Sounded like the tick was coming from the top of the engine so that is why we headed that way first.

One important item that I just realized I did not mention was that it is fine (not tick) till it warms up. This is when the ticking starts. Sorry to leave this out!

Its the rocker arms.
Nothing will fix it except new ones.
