Default Trans Temp Light On In Discovery II - Trans Temp Sensor Fix & Guide

Hello all!

I wanted to make this post in hopes that it might help someone else in the future.

My Disco 2 was acting up and I had the trans temp sensor light come on.

Some of the issues I was having were:
- Trans temp sensor light would come on randomly.
- 45% of the time it would come on as soon as the vehicle was started.
- 35% of the time it would come on within 5 minutes of driving it.
- 20% of the time it would come on after 15-20 miles.
- Vehicle would jump and shudder when almost coming to a stop.
- Vehicle would jump and shut off after coming to a stop and trying to start again.

Originally I tried changing the transmission fluid and checked the pan for any metal chards, bits, etc. But the trans fluid was clean and there wasn't any sign of wear or tear on the trans anywhere in the slightest. I changed it anyway but the light stayed on. At this point, I was all but convinced that I had to swap the trans and I was already shopping for one. But I remember what a few good Rover people told me, which was to check and scour the forums. So that is what I did, and I found a few posts that talked about the trans temp sensor. So with a much cheaper price tag than a transmission, I figured what do I have to lose? I put in my order and waited for the part to arrive. (No I did not order the part from Amazon I was using the box with smaller boxes to organize my screws etc.)

Now in the meantime, I was going over my Disco's manual like crazy to make sure I understood how it worked before I touched anything. A few days after reading the RAVE manual and familiarizing myself with what I needed to do, the new trans temp sensor came! Luckily I had kept scouring the forums here while using the RAVE manual to see the diagrams and understand what everyone on the forums was talking about. So I took some of the shortcuts that were talked about here on the forums and applied them with my new knowledge from the RAVE manual.

And it worked!

I changed out the trans temp sensor and I have had absolutely no more issues for over a week now! The light has not come on a single time and the stalling completely stopped as well. Looking at the old sensor after I pulled it from the front radiator in my Disco, it was corroded and worn down. I have driven my Disco since the new sensor was installed in short periods, and long periods, starting and stopping everything and no issues! So I am calling this one fixed and one that I am extremely happy about! Mainly because I didn't want to have to do a trans swap for my first time and I would have been in a rush to get it done before Uwharrie.

I ended up with an extra trans anyway. Along with new heads, reservoirs, doors, manifolds, and so much more. Pretty much a whole new truck in parts. But we aren't here to talk about that, nor are we going to. We'll just leave it at I have lots of extras now and that's a good thing. Right? Right? I need more room in my shed. Anywayyy moving on!

As a thank you to the forum for saving me so much time and money on this specific project, but also all of the knowledge I have gained from you all from just reading and lurking over the few years, I wanted to make a good post for others who might come across the same problem and want to give swapping the sensor a try first. Here is a little walk-through with pictures:

1: Remove the front passenger side tire.

2: Remove plastic wheel cover.

3: Pull back the flap pictured. That is where the temp sensor goes into the radiator.

This is what the sensor looks like and where it goes into the radiator.

4: Back up top remove the radiator cover and look to the very left of the radiator. It is just next to the battery on the very left of the radiator at the top. This is where you disconnect the old sensor and connect the new one.

5: Disconnect the sensor from the clasp.

6. Drop the old sensor cord down in between the radiator and then unscrew the old sensor from the radiator where it is connected. Have the new sensor ready as trans fluid will start to run from the spot where the old sensor is removed.

7. When the new sensor is screwed into the radiator I rand the cord back to where the old one was. I laid it down where it was and used a claw grabber tool to easily grab the cord and run it back up through the radiator.

8. Connect the new sensor back into the top of the radiator.

9. Place the sensor mount back into position and tighten the screw back to hold the sensor in place up top.

10. Replace the radiator cover.

11. The last thing you have to do is top off your DII trans fluid. There are guides on that everywhere but I do mine by the drip method as well.

Hopefully, this will find the person or people it needs to and save them some time and money!
