Default Trans trouble.

Have a 96 Disco V8 auto. Wont go into top gear. All other gears are fine, oil level is fine. Only started doing this after engine transplant out of 97 disco. Worked fine before transplant. Wondering if it could be electrical(ie solenoids) or a hydraulic problem or something else. Manual not too helpful.

Your tranny is not electrical, it is controlled by a t/cable which may be out of adjustment.

Check your throttle linkage, there is a kickdown cable attached to your tranny and if it is all the way out, it will keep your tranny out of top gear.

Default RE: Trans trouble.

Thanks to all for your help and steering me in the right direction. Lower Hutt Transmissions confirmed the problem, told me how to fix it, and also what probaly caused it, and they didn,t even charge me.
Problem was throttle kickdown cable jammed open although ot seemed to be correctly adjusted(2.5mm approx) He tested it bt opening throttle wide open, then testing for extra slack in kickdown cable. There was none when there should be.Quick easy fix by snipping off adjustment lug around cable allowing cable to slide back into sleeve. had to push cable into sleeve a bit further as it was sticking. Now have top gear back.
2 possible causes.
1- When removing Plenum chamber which throttle body is attached to, some forget to remove kickdown cable and pull the cable out of the trans which cant be put back in that easily causing cable to stay in kickdown (hence snipping off lug to allow cable to loosen right off into trans)
2- Crushing cable restricting cable from returning which is what happened in my case by guys who refitted engine.
Top marks to Hutt Tranmissions. And thanks to you guys as well.
