Default Transfer Case Fill Plug - Access Method

Hi all,

Quick question - looking to change my transfer case fluid. Tried to get under there with a breaker bar and a socket, but didn't seem to fit between the parking brake cable and the back of the tcase. Tried a wobble extension but it was too fat. I have like a 3" 1/2" extension but that doesn't help.

Do you guys just use a 1/2" extension to put the socket behind the parking brake drum? If so, how long of an extension should I pick up?

Thanks! Tried searching but couldn't find an answer to this one...

I just used my ½" torque wrench with no socket on it. I recall it being a snug fit but worked with little trouble. Good luck.

Serpentine belt tool with 1/2” square drive on the end.

Mmmmmm got it, I haven't needed a dedicated serp belt tool. I will try just pushing the parking brake cable out of the way with my ratchet and if that fails, I'll pick up one of those.

Thanks for the responses!

This is what I
use use
to break it loose. I just use longer 1/2" extensions. Too cheap to buy serpentine belt tool.

You can rent the serpentine belt tool at most auto parts stores for free.

I’ll offer a contrarian opinion - I tried the serpentine belt tool at one point and couldn’t use it because the serpentine tool doesn’t have a ratcheting head and the orientation of the plug was such that in order for the plug to match up with the head of the tool, the handle would interfere with the frame or exhaust.

This is how I removed my access plug. Simply moved the harness out of the way, and then popped in the ratchet (only works without the extension).
