Your symptom may have a different cause than my experience, but when my crank position sensor failed and (almost) left me stranded, I waited for it to cool down, got the truck started and drove home. The M & S lights flashed the whole way (15 miles) but I made it.

Put in a new XYZ.
I would only go in the water / mud if you absolutely have to. As there are always repair penalties.

Make sure the battery and alternator are new too as low voltage could cause the flashing too. The solenoids in the transmission need to PULL IN to affix the clutches in the planetary gear train and if they don't pull in then you get a fault code.

The more voltage the more magnetic force the solenoids have to pull in the clutches to grip.

At the worst - you have transmission damage.

But probably just the XYZ
