Default Transmission Cooler bypass

Out of curiosity. Could a 2004 Disco run fine without the tranny cooler. Does the 2004 really need a tranny cooler. I know the lines are not high pressure so as a trail fix if i had to do this . Cut the hard lines and cap them off to prevent trans fluid from leaking from the cooler itself. I may have to do this while waiting for my new trans cooler and it is a last resort but daddy's got make some money. Jb weld just wont cut it this time , lol.

If it didn't need one it wouldn't be there, LR don't waste cash on unnecessary parts. In 5C down to -25C you'll probably get away without the autobox cooler provided you don't go racing around too much or too far on the autoroutes. But during the spring and summer months you defo need an autobox cooler. Check whether the temp sender has other functions on the RAVE wiring diagrams. You will need to loop the two lines together as the pump needs to circulate the oil to somewhere.

IMO it's a risky manoeuvre deleting the oil cooler even temporarily. Rather you than me.

If and I'm saying "if" it had to be bypassed you wouldn't simply cap each hose off. You'd have to connect them inline with each other so the fluid still flows. Capping them off to where the ATF couldn't flow = BOOM in a very short time span.

All modern day trucks/suv's pretty much all come with some sort of trans cooler. A bypass type repair = would only do it out on the trail to limp back to the trailhead. I'd never drive without it on the highway as your Transmission will likely cease to exist in a few miles.

Better to park it a few days vs destroy it. Just my two cents. I see trans coolers for D2's all the time at the junk yards.

It would not be wise to bypass the cooler, trans temps can reach 300 degrees F in extremine cases...and without a cooler...you'd have a toasted trans pretty quickly. Your trans fluid does much more than just lubricate the moving parts, it collects heat and helps transfer the excessive heat through the cooler.

I wouldn't. Trans fluid breaks down somewhere around 250 if I remember correctly. Maybe 275. I went as far as to double up on trans coolers because I run larger tires and tow relatively often.

I reckon you have a good cross section of answers there bmeier all more or less stating the same thing, unless you want an expensive rebuild don't even go there eh.
