Default Transmission filiter replacement

I have a 2002 Disco with 180k miles, i dont know the last time the transmission fluid or filter were replaced and was wondering with it having those high miles if it would mess up anything or if it would be fine.

Any suggestions would be aprreciated.. Thanks

You will need torx wrench size T27 to remove the filter, make sure two O rings goes on the filter (1 large plastic ring, and 1 rubber black ring). For my filter replacement, I thought the plastic ring was extra so did not put in, and it cause P0741 code - "Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off", so shift gear will have slippage. Put the plastic ring back, clear code and it ran fine.

When draining the fluid, if it is brownish and or has a burned smell, plan on doing 2 fluid changes to get rid of as much old fluid as possible.

6 quart should be enough if nothing go wrong. In my case, I have to do it 3 time. First time without changing filter due to lack of tool, 4.5 quart. Second time change filter, 4.5 quart. Third time fix the missing O ring, which cause less less oil in the torque convert, more in the oil pan, 6 quarter. You can tell by much you drain out, then that is how much you need to put back in.

or you could just change all sixteen quarts with a bg flush.

an hour of your time and you are set.

Instructions with pics

I tried that pump in the instructions and it kept coming apart. I just bought a push-pump like on a hand soap container in the bathroom, just sized for the tranny fluid bottles. It worked much better and you can get it at the auto parts store as well.

Why would you suggest a flush on such a high mileage tranny, the back flow flush will dislodge more junk/problems then it will cure.

it doesn't backflush at all. it just uses the transmission pump and pumps new stuff in while the old stuff is getting pumped out at the same psi. The transmission machine pump matches the flow rate and just installs new stuff until its empty. then it just bypasses the machine pump when empty and runs inline with the vehicle until its turned off. that way you get all sixteen quarts changed at once with no chance of having to break the bolts on the transmission housing. once they rust in they aint coming out. the line inside the transmission comes out alot easier.
