I'd had lube places claim they couldn't do the transmission and transfer case fluids because they couldn't open them... so I thought I'd loosen the filler cap off myself...
I opened the Automatic Transmission filler, and to my shock and horror about a litre of fluid came out of the filler side (before I jammed the plug back in).
Now I thought that was supposed to be the full level. Wasn't expecting fluids to come gushing out...
Was it over full?
It's tilted back (front up) right now, would have thought that would make it less likely to be over that line.
Should I get it topped up again?
I'm confused by it.

 

Need to fill the transmission while the truck is running. You're now at least a quart low, I'm guessing. Start the truck, move the shifter through all the gears, then top up until it's dribbling out of the hole. Once you shut it off, the pump stops running and the fluid settles - above the fill plug.

Make sure to keep the gearshift in Park and not Neutral while the engine is running. I found out the hard way.

Never remove the transmission fill plug with the engine not running.

The instructions for refilling the transmission fluid say that after draining the old fluid, fluid should be added via the fill hole until it begins to run out. The engine is then started and the trans is moved through the gear settings while trans fluid is added until it again runs out the fill hole. The fill plug is then reinstalled BEFORE shutting down the engine. That's because with the engine running there is fluid circulating through the transmission. With the engine not running it all drains down into the pan (sump).

That is why fluid gushed out when you removed the fill plug with the engine not running.
