Default Transmission preventing revs above 2500

I had a transmission hose failure which emptied the transmission. I filled it up again after fixing the bad hose and now I can't get more than 2500 rpm out of the motor. It feels like there is something loading up the engine (like going up a steep hill in a high gear and not enough torque available)
It does not appear to be gear related, happens in 1st and 2nd, have not tried going any faster.
Assuming it is not low on transmission fluid as that give you revs and no drive. Pretty sure it is not over filled.
Any ideas what the issue may be?
D2 246K miles, tranny was switched for a used one a couple of years ago, so may have 150K on it I think

What happened in terms of your hose failure? Did you fill the trans by the book.(Rave). How much fluid did you put back into the system? What are you seeing when you remove the fill/check plug?

So, the flexible hose on the pipe going to the cooler started to leak, which I had repaired. The issue was that I did not connect it on to the cooler correctly and it blew off under acceleration. I put a couple of quarts of tranny fluid in to limp back home (about three miles), then filled it up.
Reading the Rave, I did run it through the gears and then top up, but I did not leave the car running in Park for the final fill up, so it is possible that it is still not topped up correctly. I will ensure that it is filled correctly this weekend and road test it again and get more data.
