Default Transmission Problems, What went wrong?

I was replacing my transmission fluid and filter today and rear the rave manual and also the how to on here. Instead of using a hand pump I used a small water bed pump that has about the same amount of pressure as a hand pump. As I was pumping the transmission fluid in the fill plug something on the top of the transmission made a "pop" sound and than fluid started comming out. After a few minutes it quit leaking as bad and than seemed like it wasn't leaking at all. I started the motor and shifted it through all the gears and it shifted smoothly and than when I looked under the car again it was running out. Is there a vaccum line or a breather valve that could have come off with the pressure of the fluid being pumped in? Please help!

Thank you!

There is a breather line but is should be far enough up that oil will not pour out of it. I'm thinking that means your pump puts out a bit more pressure than a hand pump.

I can put my finger just slightly over the pump and it quits pumping so I figured it shouldn't be a problem. And since every post and even the rave manual says it will need 8 quarts to refill after a filter change I figured, pour 8 quarts into a clean bucket and pump the 8 quarts in. With the amount of fluid in the suction and discharge hose there would be no way I would over fill it. Is there any other place fluid could be comming from?

where exactly are you filling the pan from ,

I filled it with the engine stopped which I realize is the wrong way now but to my understanding that would only cause me to underfill it which is not the case. I was pumping oil through the fill plug on the side. I did run it through all the gears and it is shifting fine but it still is spilling out. I am going to drop the oil tomorrow and try to get a mirror and look on the top of the tranny to see it it was my breather tube that is overflowing. The only thing I do not get is when I pulled my fill plug oil was shooting out of it at a steady rate for probably 5-8 seconds when I was draining the oil. If people are only filling to the plug that would be about 3-4 quarts not 7-8 quarts like is recommended.

If you fill to the plug with the engine running in neutral you should be able to get almost 5 quarts in (there is still much ATF up in the tranny). If you try to force 7 or 8 quarts into it you will hopelessly overfill it and need to drain it an refill.

when you drained the tranny, did you note how much came out? That amount is all you can put in at any time. to properly change the fluid in the tranny on your own you need to:

1. Remove drain plug
2. let drain
3. install drain plug

4. remove fill plug
5. SLOWLY pump atf inside until it pours out. (if you do it too fast you will get back splash pour out and you will think its done)
6. install fill plug

7.turn engine and let idle, shift through gears, leave in park and leave idling

8. remove drain plug while engine still idling, nothing should drain out.
9. pump atf again slowly until it pours out.

10. reinstall fill plug and go for a drive.

11. repeat all the above after engine and tranny cools. maybe next day

Note** everything in bold can be done with a helper to not have to do # 6 and # 8 removal and installing the fill plug..

Thanks guys,
I am going to drain tranny to the fill line and do the steps properly. I noticed there was not 7-8 quarts that came out but I do not know who changed the fluid last time or long long ago it was changed so I did not know if that was the right amount. So I read the manual and put as much as they said back in, which was too much. I am guessing my leaking is comming from the breather line( hopefully) I guess I will know more in a few hours.
Thanks

Default Fixed!

Simple problem of reading the manual and directions literly and not being mechanic minded. I simply over filled it and the fluid was comming out of the breather tube. Drained, filled, started it, shifted through all the gears, got it to temp opened it and refilled it until it was full. Checked again today, still full and no spillage.
Thanks everyone for the help!!!
