Well I have tried everything to fix no forward gears. I have another tranny to go in. Anybody have advice on the swap. Tricks to make it easy. or thoughts. I have air tools and a two post lift. Thanks for any help.

 

Swap tranny ECU from donor vehicle also, or have available if needed. Exam the XYZ switch on driver side, easier to clean out and re-seal now than when on the truck.

 

ditto on what Savannah said. Also replace the main output shaft seal. have a look at your tranny mounts might be a good time to replace them as well. get a new filter clean the pan out with a pressure washer. keep a smile and laugh often.

 

Thanks for the advice. Not sure what the XYZ is could you explain what I need to check. Also what is the easiest way to get the top bell housing bolts out. I just swapped this tranny and engine in from the donor. (30,000 miles). So I am going back with the original one. with the new motor. We pulled the body off to do the whole swap. Don't want to do that again if I can help it. Should I keep the original TCM since I am swapping the old tranny back in?

OK to keep module, if it is working. It talks to the other modules, so they should be "happy" with each other. XYZ switch is selector position switch that tells computer where the shifter has been moved to. It is on the side of the tranny where the HVAC drain keeps it wet. Looks like this inside, can be cleaned out and resealed (drill out rivets perhaps). And speaking of seals, might be a good time to drop the oil pan, and swap out the rear main seal on the engine as well.

 

Okay thanks I understand that now. Last question on the upper bolts on the housing. Best way to get them. Not much room there. I thought of tilting the motor and dropping the rear tail down. Is that the best way?

 

Remove the rear mounts which will allow you to tilt it down far enough to get to them. Also if you have long extensions and a wobble extension i have seen a guy be able to finagle his tools up there to get to it.

 

Maybe a dumb question from a n00b but on the BMW's I've worked on when you swap a transmission (or remove the gearbox) the engine is left balancing on two mounts and it leans/tilts forward... If you don't tie it back or brace it back the fans & pulleys then smash into your radiator.

Anything to worry about like that on our trucks?
