Default Transmission Woes

I've been working on my 60k service yesterday and today (took longer than it should have due to some unforseen screw-ups) and I just got to filling up my transmission... After replacing the filter and putting the pan back up I started filling: Just over 2 quarts in until it began to leak out the filling hole; started the engine and warmed to idle; another 2 quarts in; shifted through all the gears while holding the brake; another quart in and it began to leak out the filling hole again. I figured at this point it was full so I pulled the tube out and with it came a deluge of ATF and by the time I could rush the bolt up there over a quart had spilled out of the tranny onto the pavement. The manual says a 2mm bead should drip out... the "bead" I saw was far larger. Am I doing something wrong or did I just overfill it? The tube may have been sealing the hole allowing me to put too much in but I doubt it.

Is there a way to check the level without draining the pan and starting over?

Can anyone comment on this? I just drove it around the block, with reverse, 1st and 2nd gear operational. I didn't try and drive it above 2nd. Nothing seemed abnormal, but I don't want to just right this off.

Let the car cool down for a few hours. If you don't have a way to measure ATF temp, a good way is to feel the pan - itneeds tobe cool to the touch. Probably what has happened is that you were running it for a while as you were trying to fill it, and the fluid has become too warm and expanded. You don't need to drain anything back out, just repeat the procedure somewhat quickly on a cool drivetrain: Start engine, shift through gears, take fill plug out and fill until fluid starts to come back out, quickly put the fill plug back on.

Every time I do this it becomes a mess too...
