Default Transmission woes

So I'm studying abroad in China and my sends me an email stating that she took her LR3 in to the shop because a fault light came on and they told her that she needs a new transmission. She said that the car has been driving fine and nothing seems to be wrong with it besides the fault light and it not letting her put it in gear once yesterday before going to work. Has anyone heard about a transmission needing to be replaced with out any prior problems?

She is going to check out two places tomorrow. I will let you know what she says the problem is.

I'm sure more knowledgable folks will be along shortly but the CEL fault codes can be thrown also by a bad connection or even poor battery voltage. If it were my LR and the transmission did not exhibit any physical issues I would reset the codes and see what happens for the next few days and see if they come back...

YMMV.

And keep in mind the service writer and mechanics have been to human resource mandated sensitivity training for dealing with females not accompanied by males. It is great to find a hard working honest indy shop.

P0613 -

What does this mean?
OBD Code P0613refers to
The Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an internal failure in the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
Symptoms
Possible sumptoms of OBD code P0613
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
Causes
Possible causes of OBD code P0613
- Transmission control module circuit open or shorted - Poor transmission control module electrical connection - Faulty Transmission Control Module

All that said, the TCM is inside the tranny and can be replaced as part of the valve body, won't be cheap. Would be worth your while to have electrical plug opened and cleaned up, even throw in a new battery or have existing one charged up. Shop manual pages on what is involved with TCM attached. Some dealers just consider swap out whole transmission.
