Ok, so I did some searching and it appears that VW #06A906461A is the EXACT same MAF sensor that our Discos use. It's in a different housing but can be directly swapped and is considerably cheaper, even for the genuine Bosch part, and it's a direct swap.
That's all good and well, but I swear that this isn't what I read a couple years ago. It was a completely different sensor. I even vaguely remember pictures and a write up.
I also found this part which appears to be our sensor, but made by Delphi instead of Bosch. Not sure if it's any good, but in my experience Delphi is a reputable name.

No response from Bosch yet but my digging shows that our trucks use the 0280217532 Bosch part number. The sensor that Tornado systems recommends is Bosch number 0280218010. I am trying to figure out now if the simple change will allow our truck to register more air or if the ecu is also a limitation here. Anyways I emailed Tornado Systems this morning about the group buy and asked about the maf issue at the same time so maybe we will hear something from them.

I looked up the Bosch 0280218010. It appears that its the same sensor in a different housing. That means it would register less air on our current ECU. It would have a higher g/s limit, but it would have the same voltage limit, meaning it would actually register less air than the engine was getting because of the larger housing.

After all the confusion I talked to Land Rover directly. If you have a 4.6 Thor engine the only MAF that would have been original equipment would be Bosch part number 0280218010. So we were both wrong. The 532 is the MAF for the 4.0, the 010 is the P38-Disco 2 with Thor engine. I have followed up with Bosch to try and see which sensor they gave me information on. Their website has the wrong data for the truck so it is quite possible they gave me the information on the wrong sensor.
