Default ultra guage saves the day but....

Recently I posted a post about howling coming from my engine, and I thought i'd just wait until it got worse before I dealt with it. Bad idea!!!! I was driving home from the store yesterday and literally 300 yards from my house my engine temp starts to rise on my ultraguage, 208, 210, 224, 244!! I immediately pull over shut my truck off and she starts to smoke, and starts losing all her coolant. What I noticed was that the engine temp guage in my rover didn't even move and stayed dead center! I'm thankful for the ultra guage, because if I didn't have one i probaly wouldn't have notice the sudden increase in temp and done much more greater damage to the rover. (My eyes like a hawk on that thing ) So my next question is, the howling noise must have been coming from a bad water pump right? And that's why I lost all my coolant, when one my pulleys seized up????? Any insight would be very helpful!!!!!

Without hearing it there is no way to know. If your doing head gaskets you should replace the water pump anyway just to be thorough.

There are a coiuple of ways to track down a whine -

Slip off belt. Crank engine. No whine = noise came from something that turns.

With engine off, turn each item feeling for roughness, too much freedom in spinning, or tighness.

Or with belt on, engine running, poke a stick against each item that has a rotating part, with your ear against the stick. You'll hear what is loud and in step with the whine.

Default Update on Rover

Just got my rover back from my mechanic. $600 later and it turned out it was the ac pulley. When it seized up it threw my serpentine belt crashing into my fan and into one of my lower radiator tubes and knocked it clean off, hence the coolant loss. I'm glad it wasn't anything really major. New belt, clutch and fan, coolant, ac pulley, labor, free AAA tow equals minus $600 out of my pocket

You were lucky...244 is hot enough that you could have easily ended up with a blown head gasket too.
