Default Unbalanced crankshaft from the factory

I have 4.6 ‘03 and I have always found the idle at a stop light to be pretty rough. I am not talking about a misfire. I know what that is on this car. It is definitely not misfiring. It’s almost like the crankshaft isn’t balanced and the factory just didn’t care by 2003. I have also driven the 4.6 P38 Range Rover HSE and that engine was perfectly smooth. I also own a V8 with an actual unbalanced flat plane crank and even that’s way smoother. Do I have bad engine mounts or these late Land Rover engines were just like that from the factory. My Disco II only has 89,000 miles. Thanks.

Something is likely wrong as it should idle pretty smooth if it is running properly

Is the crank pulley wobbling while idiling?

Default crankshaft out of balance.

I can't imagine your having an unbalanced crankshaft, unless it was caused by prior damage to it, or caused by a former owner's abuse. My 2003 run smooth as glass, and I know about numerous other 4.6 L. that are smooth as glass too. I have worked on rebuilding these V8s, from the initial GM version to the later British units, and have never seen a faulty crankshaft from OEM. I strongly suspect that you have other problems causing the rough running.

Your non-misfire problem is not an unbalanced crankshaft from the factory. 2003 and 2004 4.6 V8s have an excellent Main Bearing setup with extra side bolts through the block to insure that your main crank bearings hold your crank entirely stable. It's one of the better improvements over earlier 4.0 and 4.6 motors.

You could have a *lot* of other problems causing a rough idle or engine wobble such as, but not limited to:
Worn crank
Worn cam
Worn main bearings
Worn cam bearings
Failed motor mounts
Loose crank pulley
Failing driveshaft front or rear
Transfer case problem
Transmission or connection to motor problem
Torque converter issue
