Update on our 03 Discovery
Thanks to everyone who helped us in my last post. I wanted to give a update on what's going on now. We replaced the overflow pipe and the wiper blades and took it back to finish the inspection, which we passed.
My dad talked to the guy about the service engine soon light and they ended up resetting it and the light went off. I drove the truck to a nearby town yesterday with no problems, then on my way back home the light came back on but everything seemed fine, it drove like there was nothing wrong. My dad drove it to church this morning and when he got back he said that there was a coolant leak and he was afraid it was the head gasket. We searched the forum for coolant leak topics and read what everyone else said, so I know it needs a pressure check and I really think we need to do Mike's 60K service on it.
I am wondering something, though. I have read pretty much in most of the posts that these trucks require more maintenance than most other vehicles. I'm just wondering what the reason of that is? Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but you all seem to know what you're talking about and I'd love to learn more about them.

I dont think that they need more maintenece than others, I think that they are just neglected by the previous owner who most liklely leased it and didnt take care of it so when you get it it is needing alot of love.
In the owners manual it says to chenge the coolant every 24 months or 30,000 miles, which ever it first, same with the brake fluid.
I gaurentee you none of that has been done on your trk. DexCool is corossive if it isint properly maintained.
Your stopping distance will suffer if you dont change the brake fluid.
These are just a couple of examples of things that are overlooked bymost people, they have the mind set that I have a new car so all I need to do is change the oil a couple of times a year and put cheap gas in and thats all. WRONG!!
These trk's have personallity, they are not for everyone. If you take care of it, use the right gas it will take you anywhere and back.
Use full synthetic motor oil and change it every 5,000 miles, use premium gas, pull the owners manual and read it from cover to cover, sleep on it and then read it again and you will see that LR's dont require any more maintaince than any other 4x4.
If you bought one brand new and followed the book it would be more reliable than any other car on the road.
But like I said, the used ones have all be neglected.
