I had the same issue on my 428 CJ a number of years ago. Went to reassemble what had been a running engine and the crank would barely spin. Had to have the block and caps align honed. A quick hone job at the machine shop and it spun like new.
I’ve been following this thread because I’m about to start the reinstall of my crankshaft soon (block comes home from the machine shop tomorrow). Just out of curiosity, did you follow the crankshaft refit procedure in the rebuild manual? There’s a pretty specific torque sequence for the bolts and they aren’t all torqued to the same value. I’ll try and post a picture.
yes I did, printed it off and took it with me when I did it.
Ok crank is in and moving with no binding...
what I found was my torque wrench was a messed up pain in the ***. Bought a new one and my original was like torquing 40pds higher or so from what it was set at so the 54 pds was like 90pds :-(
now on too the pistons and rods bearing install
Well, at least it’s an easy fix! Glad you found out the problem. I have a 1/2” torque wrench of unknown origin so I used my rebuild as an excuse to buy a new 3/8” one, I have more 3/8 sockets anyway and I know it will be in spec.
Ok now what the heck, I am trying to get the pistons in and aligned with the crank. I can the first one in no problem but the second one the connection rod and cap I can not get to slip in next to the first one with out it binding.
at first I got my left and right messed up as lock is upside down. but with the second one it’s not going in pass at all. Is there some trick to get theses lined up ??
Ok so this is so tight they will not slip by each other with out some work. So I have cylinder one when looking at the front of the engine on the right of it (if sitting in drivers seat it would be drivers side) and the domed shape boos facing the front of engine. Cylinder two opsisote side the domed shape bossed facing rear of engine. When you look at the rod ends the is a chamfer one side so if I have pistons still in same order they should face to ???
I have a couple pics here too This the cylinder 1 with cap setting on it and number 2 cap squished in there.
Ok so I am doing something wrong and I think I just getting messed up in terminology on this.
so the domed shape boss on the connection rod faces towards the front of engine on RH Bank. So my dumb *** question is which side is RH Bank ? Is it RH side from facing the engine from the front to the back ( If in front seat be the drivers side where the cps sensor goes?)
The engine is always referenced as you are looking at it from behind (page 1 form the rebuild manual, if you are looking for a source). Pistons 1,3,5, and 7 are on the left and 2,4,6, and 8 are on the right. The CPS is on the left and the starter is on the right.
