Default Viscous Fan Clutch - help pls

So, I had my original fan clutch starting to wobble and water pump go... so thought a good time to do fan clutch while doing the water pump. I changed it for the Haden 2995 (rock auto) in December. Well, it locked up last week - I replaced it with one from BPUtah.com (rover place). It takes a while to release... i.e. makes a ton of noise. When it does release, it's temporary. It will wind up again if I stop in town or slow down... is this normal? I can't recall it being this loud.

Any recommendations on a replacement... should I spend the 400.00 for OEM? Will it make the difference? A bit frustrated, appreciate any help.

Thanks!!

Get one from a parts vehicle. Also don't get the cheap version water pump to save a few bucks, get the brass one or else you'll be doing it all over again in a few months.

I recently did mine, and got the Airtex, highly recommended from BP Utah. Range Rover Discovery Defender Water Pump Airtex STC4378

I opted to upgrade one part- the paper gasket that came with the pump, I switched for the OEM gasket. The OEM gasket was much more sturdy than the paper one. The swap was last minute, so it came from the dealer. $25 they got from me for the gasket, so if you go that route look online for a cheaper OEM gasket.

I heard good things about the Auto Zone fan clutch, made in USA. I was shocked, but I am very pleased with it.

I also spent a long time carefully scraping old pump gasket with a razor. If I had to do it again I might look into spray on gasket remover. With all this off, I also went ahead and did my radiator hoses and dropped in a 180 t-stat.

Last tip and you might already do this. I took a cardboard box, sharpie and traced the gasket onto the bottom of the box. I circled the bolt holes and as I removed bolts, placed them in the appropriate hole on the traced pattern so they go back in the same hole. I had blue loctite on standby and red loctite for the two bolts going through the timing cover.

g'luck!

Also, double check but I think fan pulley torque was like 19 ft lbs and the water pump bolts around 16. They only need enough to secure the gasket. I used a good torque wrench and no leaks after.
