Default Waterproofing the ECU

I thought about a way to "waterproof" the ECU on my DI, let me know what you guys think. I thought about spraying it with some kind of rubber undercoat, like gravelguard or something like that. Of course it wouldn't be totally waterproof but that would definitely help. And it would also prevent it from rusting, which is why I had to buy a new ECU last February.

I don't see why it wouldn't be a good idea. Have you heard of anyone else doing it?

I've been thinking about building a box out of aluminum for it that I could open up for access and seal the top with a gasket or something. Or maybe just make the whole unit removable so I could still get to it easily if I need to.

I do, I think this would cause it to over heat from a lack of air flow.
Consider relocating it, I think I remember someone saying they did that.

Well I saw the waterproof ECU at Lucky8LLC.com and it looks like a plastic box around it. I don't see the difference between my idea and that one except maybe the effectiveness of the result. Relocating it seems a bit hard since the harness is pretty tight...

a friend of mine had decent results by taking a large pelican case (the hard plastic waterproof things the military uses) and installing his ECU and stereo AMP in it. he drilled holes in the side for the wires and siliconed them sealed after install. he can get in to it easily and he solves the overheating problem by leaving the lid unlatched when he is not crossing deep water. easy simple cheap-ish fix. i have seen stereo components install in old .50 cal ammo boxes used in jeeps too.

does anybody offer extra long wiring harnesses for our ecus? seems like they could be mounted to the headliner or somewhere above dash height and be ok more or less forever without over-heating issues...
