Got the last things of my timing cover/oil pan gasket replacement buttoned up and off the jack stands. Just waiting till Tuesday for the last coolant hose for the inline mod to show up and to be finished.

A questionable moment. I think one of the pan bolts stripped out as it won't get totally tight. I'm going to wait and see if it leaks, and if so, at least it was one that a heli-coil would be somewhat easy to install.

took two '04 Discoverys from Saint Louis, Missouri to Frisco, Colorado yesterday. i drove one with a four adults and all our gear kids and my wife drove the other with a couple more adults and one little kid and all their gear. both trucks ran great on the highway and handled well in the mountains. though, my '04 is shifting a little later now than it was before. hoping it's due to the elevation change and not over-heating the transmission. the transmission light never came on but i did do a lot of lower gear cruising down 70 on the west side of Denver.

on a side note, has anyone ever had Shell's T6 Rotella 5w40 through an oil pressure light at idle?

5W anything is darn thin for one of these motors, let alone synthetic.

Agreed. I have run 15W40 Rotella in all seasons the past 8 years in Missouri. Winter might take a second or 2 longer to start, but barely turn the key 75% of the year and starts immediately.

i have run 5w40 Schaeffer full synthetic in all my Rovers with no issues for years. because of poor planning on my part i didn't have any and went with the Rotella T6 5w40. This is the first time i've ever seen the oil light at idle.

regardless, i'll be changing the oil as soon as possible.

Drain/refilled auto trans. Went to do the same for the t-case and diffs, but I checked the rear diff and the fluid was clear. ATF wasn't bad either, so I assume the PPO actually kept up with it. Didn't have the appropriate tools for the t-case so I left that and the diffs alone.

To add to this, just finished up gravity bleeding the brakes and "replaced" the SAI filter....like others, mine disintegrated upon removal. I'll find out tomorrow if she still sounds like a jet engine in the morning.

And guess what!

The engine no longer has the dreaded 'tap, tap, tap' after all this maintenance. Stopped immediately after replacing the heater core.

*knock on wood*

PO's ditched the DII for a Nissan for their trail runs. I think they took an overall loss on the sale after seeing what they paid at auction. When I took it over it had some misfires, poor fuel economy (7/8MPG), engine knock/tap (slipped sleeves?), intermittent 3 amigos.. but a mostly clean interior (& no sunroofs, NO droopy headliner!), only minor surface rust, & decent paint. Took a bit of a risk as it's in the VIN range.

Who'da thunk a lil' bit of work and she'd smooth right up?
