There are no short cuts here. It is really not a matter of if you will have a head gasket failure on your Land Rover, it is only a matter of when (typically between 60-80K miles). Once corrected ----and done properly, the head gaskets will last for many miles.

Hmm.....that fits my scenario. I took my rover in for some serious TLC and they spotted what appears to be the beginnings of the end for my head gasket. They fit that into other repairs for $900. I'm perched right at 60k.
Where did they say your head gaskets are leaking and what did they do to find it?

Mike,
They initially thought it was the valley pan that might have allowed a tiny bit of coolant to escape. Upon removing a couple components they found a section on the front/driver's side of the block that had an obvious, but slight, head gasket leak. My mechanic said he had seen snapped bolts that invited similar leaks, but in my case it looked like a simple material failure.

So far, this fun Rover project of mine has cost me $3000 in parts, upgrades and repairs. Probably just the beginning, huh?

I have a 2K disco II @ 70k miles and i am one of the lucky ones with the same problem. could anyone recommend a shop in the San Francisco bay area? I was originally quoted $3000 to replace the water pump, thermostat, and the head job. thanks.

Contact Tony at Cerrone's European, in Redwood City. They are a great shop, have a good forum. LRRFORUM.COM, and are very competive on their pricing and stand behind their work. Tell them that DiscoMike sent you, I am a moderator on their forum.
You can reach them at, 650-365-4145

Your an asset to the forum aroohk. The thing is I own a 98 Disco 1, just like you boon. Today I have removed everything up to the intake manifold, exhaust and subsequent heads. I must say. It went rather easy. My girlfriend isn't here or I'd use her digital camera to capture it. Well, I'll keep ya posted if you think you can do it yourself, I can help with any advice. Rush!!!!!

Thank you for the kind words... I appreciate that mature advice on this forum as opposed to the BMW forum that I am on that tends to be pretty immature in how members will interact with other members.

Sadly, my rover is dead... I took it in for a smog test and in the 30 minutes the test only guy had the truck he managed to overheat it so badly that it blew out ALL seals and gaskets, and blew out the heater core. So it killed my new stereo, the carpet (front and back) and the new headgasket job that was done to the truck. It also has a really nice rod knock now. So since he says he did nothing wrong and really does not speak english; Off to small claims court I go armed with a nice repair invoice for the vehicle, and a copy of the pre buy inspection that says there was nothing wrong with the truck!

I am in the process of putting together a non profit that will do an off road adventure deal. So after Jan, I plan on getting hopefully 4 used series II disco's!

Let me know how your 1998 project is working out!

Peace
Aaron
