Default What is the heaviest thing you have towed with your Disco?

Just curious, I am the proud new owner of a 97 SE7.
I am wondering its true towing capacity.

What is the heaviest load you have pulled?

What are the biggest constraints:

tongue weight?

pulling power?

braking?

Don't get me wrong, I am not going to do anything stupid, just maybe get a boat into the river 5 miles away.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I have towed 4500lbs and it did it fine even though it struggled a bit up steep hills. Now I am in the process of buying a 24 foot boat which on a trailer is little over 7000lbs. I am about 3 miles from the boat ramp, lets see how she does.

Hi Doss-
I have the 04 with the 4.6 engine and tow about 2500 lb. trailer. I sometime load
up the back of the Disco and the trailer which might take me to about 3000 lbs.
Tows everything like a charm. A buddy of mine used to tow about 5000 lbs. with
his 02 Disco without any issues. I think as long as brakes, tires, etc. are in good
order you shouldn't have any issues.
Good luck-

Oops forgot to mention. My trailer has nasty tongue weight of about 200-220 lbs.
I have the springs in back vs. the air suspension and I have no issues with the weight.
brakes well. steers well. etc.

I regularly flat-tow (4-wheel with tow bracket) the Pinzgauer, which is around 4500 lbs. Gets a little iffy going around sharp curves, slows to 45 up hills, but tows straight down the freeway with no problem.

I've got an 03 Disco, the owners manual says that it can tow 7700 lbs with a tongue weight of 400 lbs. Now, the past two weekends I towed a 3000 lb-ish camper 600 miles through the mountians of Nevada and Utah. It dogged a little comming out of the gorges if there was a head wind, but when the wind was calm I didn't even know it was there. I would think that 7700 lbs would tax it pretty well. Oh, and I towed that camper about 6 miles off-road in the mountains around Gunlock, UT. I drug it up hills in mud and deep ruts. I'm loving that disco more and more each time I drive it. I hosed it off and drove it to work today. You HAVE to love that.

Gas milage sucks though...

I seem to remember that the manual states that the top towing capacity as in low, and not going very fast at all. I'm sure there are a lot of safety and liability issues that cause them to put that in, but that's what it says.

Your mom.

Sorry...Sometimes I can't stop my inner 5 year old. I pull my enclosed trailer with 2 bikes all the time with no issues. Total of about 2000 pounds with about 200 or 300 tongue wieght. My trailer doesn't have breaks. It's never an issue unless some douchebag cuts me off then slams on their brakes. Good luck
