Default What is the most offensive charge you have had for your rover parts?

This summer I wanted to remove my spare carrier to clean it up good and repaint it. It had some surface rust and was streaking the paint on the rear door. While pulling the rear door interior trim panel I broke about half of the clips (10). These were totally Rover specific. So I went to the nice folks down at the dealer and they wanted $5.85 per clip! Read almost $60 for some broken plastic clips!
Atlantic British sells them too.

The dealer has been my last option from then on.

power steering gear box, I paid around $400 for it with the core but the dealer quoted me $1000. I found the average online for around $500 - $600.

Sharpe Auto Group is a nice dealership but WAY over priced on most things.
I bought a bulb socket from them for my rear bumper, AB sells them for $5 plus shipping, the dealer wanted $7, so I bought it from the dealer.
You just need to shop around, I have like 10 suppliers that I compare pricing with.
The most I have paid for a single repair was the bearings on the rear axle, 4 bearings, seals, shipping and labor was $240.
Would have been less the the inner race on the inner bearing on the drivers side welded itself to the stub axle shaft.

New locking nuts when I upgraded my FDS - Local dealer wanted $4 and change... each.

Quick trip to the local ACE hardware and I was out the door with Grade 8 locking nuts for about $0.35 each...

Dealership had to order them by the way... "ordering" them probably meant running down to the local ACE hardware for some wholesale pricing... lol

Genuine LR Cv joints dealership wants over $900 ea. Rovers north sells the same part for $399. I'll be going with Rovers North. I don't trust the made in china aftermarket cv's. Stay away from the stealership!

A couple of years ago I needed new rotors and brakes. I went to the dealer to find out how much they would charge because I just moved from Iowa to California and I didn't have any of my tools. They quoted me $2000 to change the brakes and rotors. I thought that they were kidding untill they gave me the invoice with the quote. I almost ran from the dealer and then went online and bought everything for around $500. That is when I realized how crooked the dealers were. I was almost ready to sell my disco untill I found this forum.

I agree with malmberg. If it were not for the guidance of this forum I would not be looking to hold on to my Rover for very long. I really appreciate the efforts of Spike and all of the other contriubtors to help us plebians keep the truck running. This is a unique community. Thanks all!

no fault of Rover, but revolting just the same....
when I first got my rover it pulled to the right pretty hard, I knew it needed tires, but didn't have the $ and also didnt want to put new tires on before getting it alligned,.....had made up my mind to buy cooper tires but the local cooper dealers dont do allignments....took it to the goodyear store...supposedly has a good rep....the counter guy told me they adjusted the "toe in", but couldnt guarantee good results with my old tires and really put the push on to buy new goodyears...I said not now cant afford it yet, and they charged me $100. for the allignment........I looked under the vehicle (which still pulled to the right) when I got home and I believe that they didnt even touch a wrench to it...same grease and rust as before....couple of weeks later..bought tires and took it to another shop for allignment the tech showed me what was "off" and they took care of me.
live and learn

Bought a steering box from rock auto for about $400 and spent 8 hours installing it cuz the input shaft splines were so worn on the supposedly "rebuilt" one and putting the steering column on the input shaft was the hardest thing.

Best part was that it started seeping from in between the top cover plate that is held down by 4 bolts.

Its getting returned today...

If you need steering boxes, the one i installed yesterday to replace the rock auto unit was purchased from http://www.remsteering.com

this unit was immaculate and had a new input shaft! highly recommended...
