What RPM is your Disco at 70 mph and tranny Q?
I'm new to Land Rovers. My 1998 Discovery runs 2,600 rpm at 70 mph, which seems high to me. Driving along, the torque converter doesn't seem to be locking up. Do these Discovery's have lock-up converters? I assume so, but normally the test (with Domestics) is to tap the brake at road speed and the speed will bump up a little. Doesn't seem to do it w/the L/R. Any advice?
Thank you

2600 rpm is about right, tire size will make a little difference one way or the other.
No the transmissions do not have lock up torque converters.
This on Disco I's like yours.
It may need a fluid change (trans)or the kick down cable set better.

Pay attention to your tach, you will see it shift to 4th. then lock up usually at around 50 MPH on the road. By your RPM's it is safe to say you have stock size tires, if with time you up size on your tires you will see the RPM's drop a little, but for now, you are where it belongs.

On the other question, I am right at 2500 @ 70MPH.

If they don't lock up, why do I get the feeling of shifting into 5th gear just above 50 MPH? I have a 97 and would swear it locks.

made the transmissions for Rover.
A transmission that (locks) means the that you can slow with out
the transmission down shifting, now this can also be done with a
light foot on the go (gas) pedal but not to the extent that a
transmission with a locking torque converter can.
It was all done to save gas in cars but I have not seen this in years.
