What size tools for the drain/fill of autom. transmission?
Start the truck and shift through ALL the gears holding each one for about 5 seconds on the way down to 1st and then again on the way back to park.
Leave the engine running, truck level, and remove the fill plug and check/top off the trans fluid.

OK, I think I figured part of it out. The hose from the pump must have blocked of the bottoom of the filler hole allowing more to go in before it started overflowing. Once the fluid started coming out, I pulled out the hose now allowing all the overage to come out at once.
To make sure I had the right level, I opened the filler hole (without the engine running) and let the "overage" drain; about 1.5 quarts came out. Once it was almsot done dripping, I started the truck back up and went through the gears slowly (not quite spike's 5 seconds though) a few times. I then crawled back under and started pumping. I was able to get about another quart in before it started to drip out again. Closed it up and voila! If I did my calculations right, there should be 4 quarts in it, exactly the same amount that came out initially. Time for a beer...

sounds like you got it close enough. the one thing that you need to concern yourself with in the future is the temperature of the oil. atf expands a good amount with heat, so if you let it get too hot when youre filling it, you wont get the right amount in.
