Default What type of powersteering fluid 00 D2

I have a 2000 Discovery 2 that just started making a lot of noise from the power steering. It was quiet last night then when I started it this morning it was making a whining sound especialy when turning the steering. I went into to Napa for some P/S fluid and the guy said I need $18.75 a qt. fluid. I told him I would wait on that. I guess he gave me the Land Rover price. What are you guys running?

Thank you,
Willie

Well the good news just good ole power steering fluid that you can get off the shelf at autozone. The next part is why you need ps fluid. Got a leak from either the line the ps unit or the steering box. D1's used AT fluid so don't let them send you that direction.

That's good, I'll just get some standard P/S fluid. I am seeing some oil coming down from the pump area and all over the steering gear. The resivoir is down to the low fill mark, not empty. I started it again later and it was quiet. I think I will try some Lucas P/S stop leak and see if that stops the leak. When I first heard the noise this morning I thought it was the transmission, I am glad its not!

Lucas PS stop leak will not work, if you are going to try a stop leak, use White Shepherd, which you probably need to order online. If you are going to use stop leak, make sure to flush your fluid first and put it in with fresh fluid.

Then, from personal experience, when that does not work to stop the leak, you get a reMan PS pump from Rock Auto (lowest price) and install it. I went ahead and replaced the bottom hose too, I don't think it had gone bad at the time, but I know power steering fluid is corosive and it had been running down the outside of the hose for days and, I didnt want to deal with it down the road.

I'm trying the same stuff now. As mentioned before, the Lucas didn't work (too thick I think). My pump is only a year old (previous owner) so not really thinking it is that (hoping not). I was under the truck tonight messing around but didn't see where it is coming from. I wiped everything down to see if I could see where it is coming from. I sucked a bunch of the fluid out again and put the Valvoline in.

Check at each connection, check the PS cooler that runs under the rad and check that the bleed screw is shut on the steering box. What is the general location of the leak?
