Default What's wrong?

Hello,

I drive a 1999 Disco Series 1 (Feb.99), and had some trouble this evening.

As I was driving homelate tonight, the following things happened...

The battery indicator light came on, my heater started blowing cold air, my Tachometer was hardly reading and my power steering was not working.
The truck was still running fineand I drove it 4 km home and the temp guage was rising to near overheating.

Is this most likely the fan belt?? If so can a guy change one himself?

It is very late right now and we have 2 feet of snow outside so I will look into it tomorrow morning (Christmas day).

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Merry Christmas,

Tony

Yup, you need a new serpintine belt, you cna buy one at any autoparts store...not on Christmas though.
Yes you can DIY this one.
Just make SURE that you get the new belt routed corretly.

Since I will be gone for the rest of the day I need to add just in case...you will need to loosen the belt tensioner to remove and replace the belt.
If you still have no power steering then you will also need a belt tensioner. But start with the belt first.

Yes, looking this morning, it is the serpentine belt. It seems that a bolton one of the components came loose, putting the belt out of kilter and causing it to come off.

Does anyone have the instructions on how to replace the belt?? Routing, diagramsetc.

Thank you for your help.

Merry Christmas,

Tony

Merry Christmas Tony,

Spike's link has a good diagram on the routing of the belt. Tighten up your loose bolt and make sure it has not damaged anything. I would even check other components to make sure nothing is loose. Buy a new belt too.

Take off your fan shroud (this allows easier access) and then start with your crankshaft pulley and move counter clockwise (looking on from the front of the vehicle) and route the new belt as shown on the diagram. You should not have to loosen the tensioner. Just get a socket or appropriate alan wrench on the bolt holding the pully and push down as if tightening (clockwise) and this will move the tensioner down and you should able to slip the belt on. Make sure you have the belt on top of the socket so the socket is not in the way. Start, test and if everything looks good put the shroud back on and you should be back in business.

Hope this helps.

Fred

Thanks a lot Fred, I appreciate that.
Today while my wife is out making her Visa card thinner in the malls, I will see if Lordco is open. Hopefully they will have a belt. If not, the Land Rover dealership on Saturday.

Time to go shovel more snow!

Lordco came through with the belt & I just finished installing it, in a freek'in blizzard! All works great.

I noticed that a bolt is missing from the left side of my water pump bracket, that can't be good. I cranked down the remaining bolt and will contact Land Rover tomorrow to get a new bolt.
Thanks again to all that gave me advice, happy holidays.
